1Been a while.
To be precise, it has been one day short of a full year. This is probably significant.
But, to the point at hand – as you may or may not have noticed by the glaring red flag in the confessional (image courtesy xmimicx), wpc as it stands now has a limited lifespan.
This is not to say that we are killing it off – though we may have, by our near total lack of communication with you, our innumerable and adoring followers. This simply means that you can safely expect a new, respec’d and oh-so-shiny Workplace Confessional within, say, the next decade.
Further bulletins as events warrant. Which should actually be reasonably often, particularly in comparison to our track record.
Thank you.
14Yep, that’s probably the most lame title I could come up with. Some serious effort went into that.
Heh. Anyway, though, I’m pleased to say that WPC now makes extensive use of both browser and server caching, as well as compression via gzip for browsers that can handle it. Load for the Confessional is now down to less than two seconds (48kb) for a return visitor and just over five seconds (110kb) for a newcomer. That’s a significant improvement, if you recall what the frontpage was like initially.
And now that the javascript package is consolidated, smallered and cached (38.4kb – YES), item voting is now available within the archives.
HTML is valid, CSS is nicely wrapped up into a single HTTP request, most of the images are tied up in sprites, and the world is at peace … well, the world’s still screwed, but WPC is in slightly better shape. Woot.
41Relatively minor updates today. Mods have been made to the archive for those who wish to view only Confessions or only Overheard items, as requested. These are linked from beneath the frontpage preview areas.
Notably, we now have full support for Internet Explorer (woot!). Those of you who are locked in with IE because of your unfortunate office network situation, we now cheerfully (ish) accommodate you.
Mostly out of curiosity, there are now links in the footer to add alerts for WPC’s feeds. These are run through ZapTXT, and if they work for you, let us know.
Cheers –
